Q: How do I choose the right flange for my joint?
A: Choose based on the joint structure and application, not just pipe diameter. For two pipe ends that are bolted face-to-face, a flat butt-joint flange with a gasket is normally used. For joints that need to be opened often, a V-band flange with a matched clamp profile is convenient to service. For a turbo inlet, choose a T3 or T4 turbo flange that matches the turbine housing. Male/female interlocking flange pairs are generally designed for metal-to-metal sealing without a gasket.
    2
Q: What is the difference between a bolt-on exhaust flange and a V-band flange?
A: A bolt-on flange uses bolts and a gasket, making the joint straightforward to install and service, but the gasket is a consumable item that should be replaced when the joint is opened. A V-band joint is more compact and faster to remove, but it requires a matched flange and clamp and good alignment — there is no industry-wide sizing standard for V-band flanges, so components from different makers are not always interchangeable.
    3
Q: How long do the flanges last, and can they be reused?
A: Service life depends on the material, working temperature, corrosion exposure and installation quality. Stainless steel generally provides better corrosion resistance, while coated carbon steel can be a cost-effective option for many applications. Flanges can normally be reused if they remain flat, undamaged and free from significant corrosion. A distorted, cracked or heavily corroded flange should be replaced rather than reused.
    4
Q: Do I need a gasket with my flange?
A: It depends on the joint and sealing design. Flat-face bolted joints generally use a gasket. Male/female interlocking V-band designs are usually designed to seal metal-to-metal without a gasket, while some flat machined V-band designs use a gasket or sealing ring. Because the sealing method follows the flange profile, always confirm the requirement for your specific flange design.
    5
10 Q: Why does my joint still leak after I tighten the bolts?
A: A gasket alone does not guarantee a leak-free joint — flange flatness, alignment, gasket type and pipe fit all matter. Check that both faces are flat and clean, that the gasket is centred and the correct type, and that the pipework is not pulling the joint out of alignment. If a flange face is significantly warped, replacing the gasket alone may not solve the leak.
