At partial load, the throttle valve opening is small, and the piston needs to overcome significant vacuum resistance when moving downward to draw in air—this wastes energy (referred to as pumping losses). Introducing exhaust gas can reduce the required throttle opening, thereby lowering these losses and improving fuel economy.
Lowering the combustion temperature can suppress knock (commonly known as "engine pinging") in gasoline engines, allowing engineers to design a higher compression ratio to improve the engine’s thermal efficiency.
Core Working Principles
The core purpose of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is very clear: to lower the temperature of the combustion chamber, thereby suppressing the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ). The basic working process is as follows:

Exhaust Gas Extraction
When the engine is operating under medium-load conditions (e.g., constant-speed cruising), the EGR valve opens under the control of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

Exhaust Gas Delivery
A portion of the exhaust gas emitted by the engine (usually 5%-15%) is directed to the intake manifold through the EGR pipe.

Mixing and Recirculation
This portion of exhaust gas mixes with fresh air and fuel to form a mixture.

Entry into the Cylinder
The mixture is drawn into the cylinder to participate in combustion.
Diesel engines operate with a high excess air ratio and high combustion temperature, making them a major source of NOₓ emissions. Therefore, EGR systems are crucial for diesel engines.
