Q: What is a hydroformed special shape tube, and how is it different from a welded tube assembly?

A: A hydroformed tube is formed as one piece instead of being assembled from multiple cut and welded sections. The tube blank is placed in a die and formed from the inside by high-pressure fluid, allowing complex and irregular profiles to be produced in an integrated forming process. This can reduce welding joints, provide a smoother inner surface and help achieve shapes that are difficult to make by conventional bending and welding. For simple straight or single-bend parts, a conventional fabricated tube may be more practical.

Q: What shapes can you produce, and can you manufacture them from my drawing?

A: Yes. We can manufacture complex and irregular profiles, including multi-bend shapes, tapered or expanded sections, shaped ends and tubes with integrated features such as sensor ports. Pre-bending the tube blank before hydroforming can also help achieve complex geometries that are difficult to produce by bending alone. 3D models such as STEP or IGS are preferred for review, while 2D drawings can also be reviewed if they contain sufficient dimensional information. Samples can also be provided for evaluation when no drawing is available.

Q: Which materials can you use for hydroformed special shape tubes?

A: We can supply SS304, SS409, titanium alloy and aluminium alloy, depending on the application. SS304 is widely used for exhaust and general-purpose applications. SS409 is suitable for many high-temperature exhaust applications. Titanium is used where low weight and high temperature resistance are important, while aluminium is more suitable for lower-temperature applications such as intake and cooling systems. We can recommend the material based on your working conditions.

Q: How is wall thickness controlled during hydroforming?

A: Hydroforming is designed to control material flow during forming and achieve good wall-thickness consistency across the formed section. Some local thinning can still occur in areas with tight radii or significant expansion, so wall thickness is inspected after forming. If your application has a minimum wall-thickness requirement, please include it on the drawing so we can confirm the forming feasibility before production.

Q: What are the advantages of hydroforming over a welded tube assembly?

A: Hydroforming can form complex curved profiles in one integrated process, reducing the number of welded joints required. The formed tube also has a smooth inner surface without weld beads at the formed section, which helps maintain smooth gas or fluid flow. Fewer welded joints can also reduce potential leak points and simplify the overall structure. The actual advantage depends on the part design and application.
